“The Wise Men went to the house. There they saw the child with his mother Mary. They bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures. They gave him gold, incense and myrrh.”

(Matthew 2:11)

God gave us the first Christmas gift when He sent His Son Jesus! In return, The Three Wise Men brought three special gifts to thank Him for sending our Savior. To commemorate this tradition, many families have decided to give three special gifts to their children on Christmas rather than the countless other gifts they feel compelled to provide. Gifts are then given freely out of love instead of obligation. This can change the course of gift giving! OK, so how do we break the news to our kids? Try asking them for two things they really want and leave the third “Big” gift and stocking stuffing for Santa! Perhaps all the other gifts won’t get lost in the shuffle and tossed aside like they do in our family! Our kids tend to hone in on one or two presents anyway and ignore the rest.

Lesson 8– Ask your children why the Three Wise Men brought gifts for Jesus.  They were not simply birthday gifts, they were gifts of thanks! How do we explain why we give gifts on Christmas?  We give gifts as a symbolic gesture of thanking God for the gift of Jesus. We give gifts to show our love and  appreciation to others for the sake of giving, not receiving! This is the true Spirit of Christmas!
